Netball is an important part of the Waubra community and a popular activity for the dozens of locals involved in the town’s netball club. The club provides an important social function for the town and has strong family followings.
The teams are based at the Community Hub and hold fund-raising events throughout the year, which are often linked in with the football club.
The Waubra Netball Club is part of the Central Highlands League and runs three junior and three senior sides – under 13, under 15, under 17 and the A, B and C senior teams. About 60 players participate in the six grades and there is a large support group of coaches, team managers and parents that help out at training and games.
The Saturday competition league has been running for many years and prior to joining the Central Highlands League was part of the Lexton League. Teams travel as far as Skipton and Daylesford for league games each week. Teams train at the Community Hub on Thursdays, with senior teams occasionally travelling to Ballarat for training.
Over the past two years the club has been quite successful with three sides playing in the grand finals each year:
2012 – B, C and U17
2011 – A (Premiers), C and U17
The Netball Club cook teas for the footballers after training on Thursday nights and everyone in the community is invited to enjoy tea in the clubrooms from 7pm.
