Waubra waffle, week ending 5th September

Good luck to our two netball and two football teams who are in preliminary finals this weekend. To have 4 teams is a terrific effort and no matter what the result is you have all represented the club well and should be proud of your achievements.

Last week our A grade netballer’s came up against a strong Skipton team and although we tried very hard until the end we were defeated by a better team on the day. Our C grade netballers played against Rokewood and had a terrific game coming away with a great win. Sophie Cullinan had a fantastic game in goals and now the girls come up against Hepburn for a spot in a grand final. Our B grade girls were lucky enough to have the weekend off and today play against Learmonth as well for a spot in a grand final.

Our senior and reserves footballers were lucky to have the weekend off after good wins in week one of the finals and both teams are up against a strong Springbank team.

Waubra waffle, week ending 29th August

Congratulations to all CHFL award winners from all clubs last Monday night. A particular congratulations to James Rushton and Kelly Moran who were selected in senior football and A grade netball Teams of the Year. Eliza Jane Clark was runner up in the B grade netball best and fairest. Well done to all other vote getters on the night and those that attended the evening.

Monday night also saw the induction of Doug Hobson to life membership of the Central Highlands Football League. Most people from Waubra and the CHFL would know Doug and what an amazing job he does. For him to get formally recognised for his work is a fantastic result. I have included some details about Doug’s involvement in CHFL and the community and on behalf of the club I want to congratulate Doug.

DOUG HOBSON:

On a community level Doug has been farming in the local Waubra area and has raised his family here. He has been actively involved in the local community as a past president of the Waubra Primary School and is currently heavily involved in the Waubra Wind farm Festival. He is involved in the Burrumbeet CFA unit, taking on many roles including Communications officer. On a club level Doug has been involved with the Waubra Football Netball Club and was on the Football Committee for over 30 years. During this time Doug was involved in all aspects of the club. While many people are strongly involved in their local club for many decades Doug has demonstrated an outstanding commitment to the league, being actively involved as a delegate for over 30 years. His longevity as a club delegate developed a robust knowledge of the League, the issues it has faced and the development it has made. This placed Doug in an ideal position for his current role of Vice President of the Central Highland Football League. This is his third year in the role and his knowledge, communication and interest in the league enables him to fulfill his role to an exceptional level. With his high level of dedication to football around the region, he demonstrates his ongoing commitment to the league and the professional approach he takes to this current role.

Last weekend we had 5 teams (2 football and 3 netball) enter the first week of finals which was a terrific result for the club. Of the 5 teams we were lucky enough to get our senior and reserves football and B grade netball straight through to preliminary finals. Our C and A grade netballers came up against really strong teams and unfortunately fell a little short. The girls are keen to rectify this in the semi-finals this weekend! Our B grade netballers put in a great display to come away with a terrific win over Springbank, who had beaten them during the season. In the football our reserve boys played a strong brand of footy which saw them record a strong victory over Ballan. Our senior guys also played a very good game to come away with a hard fought victory.

Waubra waffle, week ending 22nd August

Congratulations to all teams competing in the first week of finals. All up we have 2 football teams and 3 netball teams competing which is a fantastic effort.

Last week we saw the end of the home and away season and on that note I want to thank all of our football and netball coaches and volunteers for a wonderful year. Without your help the club simply does not exist!

Last week our under 12 boys again put in a great display against Daylesford and really had a red hot go like they have all year. The boys have shown some great improvement over the past 12 months and we look forward to seeing them again next year.

Our under 14.5 boys had another win which was the 6th for the year which considering last year was the first year back after an 8 year hiatus it is a fantastic achievement and a great reflection on the hard work that Tige & Caryn Severino and our junior coaches have done.

Our under 17.5 boys had another tough game and were again undermanned and unfortunately went down to a strong Daylesford team. I really thank the under 17.5 players, coaches, volunteers and supporters for your hard work in getting through a tough season. Although results did not show there were some very positive signs.

Our reserves footballers had a strong win against Daylesford and played some good football. Good luck over the finals series.

Our senior footballers came up against a strong Daylesford team and were outplayed by a better team. We will need to regroup for a big game against Bungaree today.

The junior netball started well with the U13 girls having a strong win, this was followed by a triller in the U15’s, who got up by one goal. The U17 girls played well but went down by 5 goals. This is the end of the season for the junior girls, we hope they enjoyed a successful season. The senior netball teams all had strong wins. The girls from Daylesford were fun to play against and enjoyed their last game for the season. Today the A grade will take on Hepburn, B grade have Springbank and C grade will match up with Bungaree, a few of these games didn’t go our way during the season, so we will be keen to play well and have next weekend off!

Waubra waffle, week ending 15th August

Today we travel to Daylesford for our last home and away game for the 2014 season. It’s fair to say the season has once again flown by. I want to take this opportunity to thank all of our players, coaches, volunteers, committee and sponsors for all of your help for the season gone. Without your support it is very difficult to run a football netball club.

Last week we had our major raffle which was once again a great success. Thanks to everyone that purchased a ticket in the draw. The winners of the draw were Mick Hingston, Tom Nijam, Jimmy Rushton, Nick Clark and Ryan Philbey.

There were some tough matches against Dunnstown, we ended up with three wins in the B, C and Under 13. The other games were well fought. We look forward to our last home and away game this week.

Our under 12 boys had a busy weekend last weekend with the game against Dunnstown on the Saturday as well as the Lightning Premiership on the Sunday. on both days our boys equipped themselves very well and all in all have had a fantastic year. Thanks to Robbie Gordon, Tige & Caryn Severino for your help with the boys and hopefully we can sneak one more win out this weekend.

Our under 14 boys came up against a strong Dunnstown team and were right in the game up until the last few minutes however were unable to get the victory. It was another fantastic effort and thanks must go to Mick Cullinan, Tige & Caryn Severino and Robbie Gordon for your help this year. What an amazing season these boys have had considering it is only the second year we have fielded an under 14’s team after having an 8 year hiatus.

Our under 17 footballers had another difficult contest against a good Dunnstown team and were unable to come away with a win. It has been a trying year for our boys and hopefully we can build on this season to improve next year. Thanks must go to Jake Whelan and all of his coaching staff for all of the hard work that has been put in this season.

The reserves and senior footballers had strong wins which was pleasing to see given we also had some injury concerns. It will be good to see both sides in the finals again this year.

JUNIOR FOOTBALL & NETBALL PRESENTATION NIGHT:

Our Junior presentation night for U12, U14.5 footballers and U13 and U15 netballers. It will be held at the Waubra Hub on Friday 5th September at 6:00pm for a 6:30 start. Tea will be a BBQ with the cost $10 per family. See Tige Severino or Steve Crooke for further details.

SENIOR FOOTBALL AND NETBALL PRESENTATION NIGHT(under 17, C, B, A grade netball & 17.5, reserve and senior football) will be held on Friday the 19th September at Miners Tavern in Lydiard street Ballarat. The night will be a semi formal evening with a sit down meal and table service. Numbers are needed for catering so please let us know ASAP of your availability.

Waubra waffle, week ending 8th August

Today we have our final home game for the year against a traditionally strong club in Dunnstown in what is sure to be another tough day of competition for all football and netball teams.

Last week we travelled to Snake Valley and had the opportunity to play on a great surface against Carngham Linton. In the football our under 12’s again put in a terrific performance our under 14.5’s recorded another fantastic win. On behalf of the club I want to congratulate everyone involved in the resurgence of the under 14.5 football team. To come from not having a team for 8 years to putting together a team last year to winning 5 games so far this season is an amazing achievement!! In the under 17.5 our boys started slowly and although they played really well after quarter time they still went down.

The junior girls had a tough morning on the netball court coming up against a strong opposition of Carngham. The girls played well, but were outscored by accurate shooting by their opponents. The senior teams fared better all posting strong wins. The senior teams are sitting in the top 3 on the ladder, but Dunnstown aren’t far behind in all grades, so there will be some tough matches this weekend.

Waubra waffle, week ending 1st August

Today we come up against Carngham Linton in what is again sure to be a very competitive day of football and netball. We are now down to the last 3 games of the year so I’m sure all games will be very hardly fought from both teams.

Last week we had our Family Day at Waubra against Bungaree which saw a big crowd attend. This was a tremendous success with many families attending and having a great time. Thanks must go to Tige & Caryn Severino, Robbie Gordon, Cindy Clark, Marie Loader, Ebony Corden and Carmen McTigue for their efforts in organising such a great event. It was great to see so many kids involved in the grid match at half time, we hope to see more of these young players in the future at our club.

On the football front our under 12’s put in a fantastic effort against Bungaree and had a real crack which was terrific to see while our under 14 boys registered their 4th win of the year which is a fantastic effort considering this is only the second season that the under 14’s have been playing since an 8 year spell. Our under 17’s came up against an extremely strong Bungaree team and were outmanned but they continuously tried extremely hard all day. Our reserves boys put in a great effort against Bungaree however they went down by 8 points in a terrific match. In the senior game Bungaree showed why they are the premiership favourites after they ran over our senior boys in the last half of the senior games.

The netball was always going to be tough and the junior teams played well against a strong opposition, but were unable to record a win. The C grade clash was 1st V 2nd Waubra had a slow start and were pulling their lead back in the second half, but ran out of time, going down by 4 goals. The A and B teams played well and demonstrated their strength, recording good wins.

MAJOR RAFFLE:

Our major raffle is now only a little over a week away so please ensure all of your tickets are sold and returned to the club as soon as possible!! Please see Tim Clark 0409 316 972 if you are having difficulty selling them as they need to be sold!! Tickets are $50 a person which includes drinks (beer, wine, champagne and soft drink) from 1-4, finger food, bus to and from Waubra, guest speaker and a chance to win $6000!! Please see Chris Bourke, Cindy Clark or Toni Briody for tickets or further details.

Waubra waffle, week ending 25th July

This week we welcome Bungaree to our first “Family Day” where we will celebrate the important part that families play in community sport. There will be a jumping castle, face painting and a kids football game for 5-8 year olds at half time of the senior football game. If any children (Waubra or Bungaree) want to play please speak with Robbie Gordon, Tige Severino or myself ASAP. A big thanks must go to Darren Rix, the Bungaree Committee, members, players and supporters for allowing us to have this day on a Sunday. On the football and netball front we are expected to see some fantastic games with numerous first vs second combinations in both football and netball.

Last week we travelled to Skipton for what were good conditions for football and netball. Our under 12 footballers again battled hard and played very well while our under 14’s had a fantastic day and came away with another great win. Our under 17’s had high hopes going into Saturday’s game however a few mistakes in the second quarter cost our boys and in the end we fell short. Keep your heads up boys and hopefully a win isn’t too far around the corner. Our reserves (who were undermanned) played very well and recorded a really good win. Our senior boys also had a good result and played well as a team.

The A grade girls though they would have a tough side to contend with last week and they weren’t disappointed by the fight Skipton put up. It was a high scoring game, with Waubra scoring 56 goals, getting up by 2 goals. The A and B grades had good wins and are both sitting on top of their ladders, but the girls will have to bring their best games against Bungaree to get another win this weekend. The U17 girls had a great game which was extremely close, but unfortunately they went down by one goal. The U15’s were competitive, but went down to Skipton. The U13 girls have made great improvement over the year and had a good win. Thanks to our netball coaches for their work so far, we’re having a great year. Part of the success is due to the help volunteers around the club do week after week, we appreciate your contribution. Good luck to all teams today, we’ll need it!

Major raffle:

The club has its annual major raffle on Sunday 10th August at Waubra which is the biggest fundraiser for the club for the year.

Waubra waffle, week ending 18th July

Today we travel to Skipton in wintery conditions which again see all teams facing tough football and netball games in all grades.

Last week we had our past players, sponsors and supporters day which was a great success. It was fantastic to see so many sponsors, past players and supporters attend what was a great day. Thanks to Marie Loader and the ladies in the canteen for all of your hard work in preparing two meals in the one day as well as normal canteen duties. Thanks also to Gerard Fitzgerald for a very inspiring speech and an insight into successful teams.

On the football field our under 12, 14 & 17 boys came up against very strong Buninyong teams and although trying extremely hard were outclassed in difficult conditions. All teams gave all they had and it was a fantastic effort by all boys. In the reserves game our boys had a strong win which was setup with a very strong opening term whilst our seniors played in a very entertaining game which saw both teams come away with two points.

It was nice for the junior netball teams to have some sunshine to play in this week! The 13B and 13A girls faced strong Buninyong teams and were unable to get up for a win, but the girls played well, in particular Julia Cocksedge, Zalia Clark and Charlie Williams. The U15 had a great team effort and got up by 11 goals. The U17 girls played a great game against a much higher ranked opposition, only going down by 7 goals, with Rachel Crook best on. The C grade girls got out to a great start and were able to hold on and build on their lead, recording a strong win, which was due to a great team effort. The B grade girls had a good win with Eliza Clark best on. The A grade also had a stong win, with Olivia Cameron strong in the attacking end.

We are now down to the last 6 games of the year so let’s get behind all teams and support each other as much as possible for the remainder of the year.

Our next home game is against BUNGAREE which will be played on SUNDAY 27th July which will coincide with our family day. Our family day is a chance for all of our Waubra families and friends to get together and enjoy a day out at the footy. There will be a jumping castle and face painting for the kids while we will also have a football game at half time of the senior football for kids aged between 5 and 8 years old. If you are interested in having your child play please contact Robbie Gordon on 0400 693 841.
